Kill The Naked: Progress Report 1

It has been quite some time since I have been able to post any updates regarding my ‘Kill The Naked’ album project, but I do have some further information and some audio clips from a work in progress to share with you!
To be honest my schedule has become so busy in recent weeks that it has been virtually impossible to find not only the time but the drive to carry on with the project. That is not to say I haven’t done any work on tracks for the album (which I am fast reconsidering streamlining down to an EP, for now, due to schedule constraints).
I’ve laid down quite a few bits that just haven’t developed in to something further. I think production kind of got a bit muddled and I wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to take tracks in. However a track I began work on as a techno track has actually evolved in to a drum and bass track. The decision to change genre was based purely on the sample used for the track.
This work in progress samples an 80’s classic (yes I know it’s the ‘in’ decade right now but that was not the reason for inclusion here). I initially used the sample within a 4/4 balls-out techno track but found it sounded a bit too generic and offered nothing new. It was only recently after scrapping the techno track and completely reworking the sample that I found it would fit in to a drum and bass style perfectly. Hence the decision to take the track forward as drum and bass.
The track has no title but you can listen to two separate clips at the end of this post. I’d love to get some critique to see what you think. The bass line and various effects and levels have yet to be added so what your hearing is essentially vanilla.
Lastly I think I am enjoying drum and bass production more than house/techno production. I think it offers me more room for creativity and experimentation with some bizarre ideas. The techno stuff just became formulaic and I wasn’t enjoying it so I think the final EP (or album) product may well not feature this genre but concentrate more on experimental breakbeat tracks. Of course with the way production is going right now I’ll probably have changed my mind again by the next update.
For now though, enjoy the audio clips and please do drop in a comment or two. All critique welcome!

Exclusive ‘Kill The Naked’ audio clip!

Another small update regarding the album project. I’ve spent some time working on drum programming to get some really crazy breaks going on. I thought I would put it a quick clip of some stuff I am working on right now, see what you make of it.
It’s rough stuff (literally!) but I like where it’s headed along with the unpredictability of the breaks. Right now it’s all just experimental to see what sounds I can make, maybe some of this stuff will make it in to the final project, we shall see.
Listen and (hopefully) enjoy this small clip. Comments are very much welcome!

Project doubleokay is go!

As mentioned in previous posts, I declined to reveal my new artist name due to concerns that the domain name I wanted may get taken. With the site getting hacked it seems this was a sensible move!
With the last of the domain names I wanted now secured I can reveal further plans regarding my little album project.
The name I have chosen is doubleokay, meaning literally “okay okay”. Doesn’t get much simpler than that! I also chose this particular name as it feels like it rolls off the tongue easily and makes for a memorable name both literally and from a marketing position. At some point in the near future I will have a dedicated doubleokay website with downloadable samples, album art and more. For now visiting www.doubleokay.co.uk will redirect you to this blog.
I can also reveal the (provisional) name for the collection will be Kill The Naked. It sounds a bit harsh if you take it in it’s purest literal form. However my interpretation of this is to slay the obvious in the world of music production. “Kill the naked, unoriginal sounds. Make something new, shrew, different. Unique.”
Looking at the image header for this post will give you the sneakiest of peeks at the album art I am designing in between laying down beats. All will be revealed at a later date!
As a side project, I am looking in to future projects using different monikers, possibly even making collaborations depending on how this goes and how much time I have to dedicate to the cause. For this reason I have also secured the domain name www.ithinkitswork.co.uk (which, like the doubleokay domain, currently redirects back to this blog) as a label name of-sorts. Better to secure the domain now than lose it later!
Kill The Naked by doubleokay will be released on I Think It’s Work Records later this year. (I’ve always wanted to do that!)
I’m heading back to the studio

A fair æon or two ago I would spend many an hour making music. A minor amount of success was attained as I was awarded Electronic Artist Of The Month by Yahoo! and Real for some pieces I wrote earlier on this decade. I also managed to get one of my pieces reviewed in (now defunct) MP3 Magazine which was a fantastic personal achievement considering I never really promoted any of my stuff on my old Besonic account! It’s been a couple of years now since I have written anything new but I’ve got a taste for it again and am starting toying with ‘beats and pieces’ (sigh!) in the aims of putting together some new material.
As I am living abroad right now and don’t have my full quota of equipment to hand I am looking in to some alternative packages to put simple music together, just to get the creative juices flowing again. One of my favourite packages is Fruity Loops although I also like to work with some of the great tools and the flexibility of Adobe Audition too (not really a fan of the multitrack feature so much though).
To whet your appetite I have included a link in this post to a track I wrote some time ago called ‘Love (How Do You Say?)‘ which I wrote under my artist moniker of ‘Delörean‘. Feel free to download it, redistribute it, remix it, cut it up, mash it up whatever your whim although if you do perform any of these actions please do pass the credit back. I’ve hosted the file with popular file storage guru’s MediaFire so as not to zap what little bandwidth allowance my hosting provider provides.
If you have any difficulty using the link please do leave a comment and I will fix it asap. Enjoy the free track, I would love to read your comments on it and keep a look out for future posts of new material!
